Are condoms the only method to prevent STIs?

Condoms are your best friend when it comes to the prevention of many Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. But, are they the only method available to prevent STIs?

Condoms, when used correctly and consistently are 98% effective at preventing STIs: they are recognized as one of the most effective methods of preventing STIs. They are recommended because they come with the additional benefit of preventing unwanted pregnancies. This is applied to both the male and female condoms.

So, are there other methods to prevent STIs?

Yes, there are, however, keep in mind that condoms are the most recommended method as it is very effective when used correctly and consistently. The methods below can only reduce your chances and may not be very effective when used in the absence of condoms.

Other methods to prevent STIs include:

  • Limit sex partners and/or stay faithful to one partner
  • You and your partner(s) should be tested regularly
  • Vaccines for some STIs such as human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B
  • Only have sex when sober –not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, to ensure you make safe decisions
  • Use water-based or silicon-based lubricant during anal sex

Remember!

Some STIs such as HPV, Herpes simplex virus, trichomoniasis, and syphilis can still be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. This is why you and your partner(s) should always get tested before engaging in sexual activities.

The word of the day is to use a condom and get tested regularly!
