Online dating: do's and don'ts

By Anonymous July 4, 04:21 pm
Your search for the partner of your dreams might just lead you to the new and exciting world of online dating. Keep our tips handy if you’re planning to take the plunge.
Do...
Post recent photos of yourself

A clear and flattering profile picture can significantly increase the number of clicks your profile gets. But in an attempt to put your best face forward don’t overdo the photoshop. If things go well, you will eventually meet a few people who have seen your pictures and you don’t want them to expect an Angelina Jolie look-alike to show up unless you actually are one.

Take it slow

No matter how incredible your connection seems, just as in 'offline' dating its best to take things slow. Wait and see how compatible you are over e-mail and chat before sharing your phone number. With personal pictures, emails and chats it’s very easy to develop a sense of familiarity online but rushing things can scare people off. So take your time and get to know each other a little before planning to meet.

Be honest about what you’re looking for

One of the great things about online dating is that you can get a lot of potentially uncomfortable questions out of the way before you even talk or go on a date. So whether you’re looking for a casual flirtation or a relationship, don’t be embarrassed to share exactly what you want. This is a great way to ensure that the people who contact you have the same priorities as you.

Don't...
Try and be someone you’re not

Our online selves are almost always better, more attractive versions of our real selves. While there is no harm in putting your best foot forward, when it comes to online dating it's best to be as honest as you can. If you’re not 'passionate' about English literature or long walks on the beach, don’t put it on your profile, because you might end up on a date with someone who is.

Put yourself at risk

Being cautious about sharing personal information is very important to ensuring your safety while dating online. If you’re unsure about sharing pictures or sexting, don’t feel obligated to do it and let your discomfort be known. In your interactions online, it’s best to avoid sharing your home or work address. When you decide to meet someone face-to-face, arrange to meet at a public place (at least for the first few times) and ensure that your friends or family know where you’re going. Don’t let them pick you up or drop you and most importantly trust your instincts.

Show too much skin

If you wouldn’t show up shirtless for a first date, you shouldn’t put up a shirtless picture on your profile. While some people might see revealing photos as sign of confidence, others might find it in bad taste. If you are proud of your body, a photo of you in a well fitting outfit can bring that out just fine.
